December Athlete of the Month: Drew Trafton

How and when did you discover CrossFit?

It was actually my sister-in-law Megan who introduced me. We were visiting her in New York City while she was competing in the 2018 Open. She invited us to watch, and I found the intensity of the workouts as well as the community built around them very appealing. When I started a new job in the summer of 2019 in Dover, I needed a new gym and knew that I wanted to give CrossFit a try myself. To be honest, I wasn’t sure it was for me as I had very little experience with most/all of the movements and the athletes all seemed very intense. However, after completing the on-ramp, I was floored by how welcoming the community is, how incredible all the coaches are, and how accessible the workouts can be with proper scaling. I feel that I’ve found a home to push my fitness to the next level, and I’ve even convinced my wife to join! We used to work out together at our old gym, and it’s been great to be able to take classes together again.

How has CrossFit affected you since you started?
CrossFit has really helped me get to know myself; through completing the workouts, I’ve learned what my limits are and have often surprised myself how far I can push them. Learning what I can achieve with concentration and dedication has really improved my confidence as well, and helps keep me focused on a healthy lifestyle so I can be around with my son for a long, long time.
What class do you normally attend?

I love the 4:00 class – it’s a great opportunity to leave the stress of the workday behind and reset my mental state before heading home.

What are your short and long term goals?

My short term goal is improve lean muscle mass. I was a tall, skinny kid and grew up into a tall, skinny adult. I’ve always aspired to improve my strength, and CrossFit has really helped me make process toward this goal. In the long term, I hope to stay healthy in order to be able to support and enjoy my family for a long time.

What’s your favorite WOD/movement?

I’d actually have to say the Power Snatch is my current favorite movement. It was incredibly challenging and awkward at first but I feel like I’m finally starting to dial it in.

What’s your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?

Anything even close to resembling lunges. Overhead plate lunges, split jacks, and even split jerks all break me when they’re in the workout.

What is one interesting fact many people don’t know about you?

I’ve traveled extensively, and have lived about 2 years collectively out of the country (mostly Mexico and Italy). I was a Romance Language major in college, and used to be fluent in Spanish and Italian…sadly there isn’t much opportunity to practice either in New Hampshire so my skills are definitely getting rusty.
