How and when did you discover CrossFit?
My husband (Steve Ek) introduced me to CrossFit. I was a runner and would occasionally lift in our basement or at the local gym, and always said that I would never do CrossFit. Steve had been doing it for a few years, and would come home sweaty every morning, raving about his workout. I eventually found myself extremely bored with running/the normal gym. In November of 2019, I finally signed up after realizing I needed to do something different (and more challenging). When the pandemic hit in March, I had only been doing CrossFit for a few months and barely knew the difference between a clean and a snatch. So I feel like I didn’t actually start CrossFit until June 2020. During the months of March-June when the gym was closed, I was still jogging and working out in our basement gym (not doing any CrossFit related workouts). Thankfully, the gym opened back up, and now I am about 80% sure what the difference between a clean and a snatch is đŸ™‚
How has CrossFit affected you since you started?
I used to pretend I had asthma in high school so that I didn’t have to run the mile warm up for ski team practice (I do not have asthma for those wondering). CrossFit has taught me that getting uncomfortable and pushing myself in a workout can actually be kind of fun. I am not a competitive person, but CrossFit has challenged me to get competitive with myself and set goals…AND accomplish them!
What class do you normally attend?
5:30 am!
What are your short and long term goals?
Short term goals- string together double unders and toes to bar.
Long term goals- get stronger in every lift and put more time/effort into practicing the things I struggle with.
What’s your favorite WOD/movement?
Cleans and pull ups!
What’s your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?
Handstand push ups, snatches and double unders. Like I said, I’m really good at not practicing things I suck at.
What is one interesting fact many people don’t know about you?
There isn’t a food that I don’t like, I’ve been waiting for my growth spurt since 4th grade and I LOVE to bake. I really love my career as an OT, but if I had choose a different one I would be a baker.
