What our coaches have to say about our athlete of the month:
Mike consistently shows respect for everyone at the gym. He goes out of his way every time to greet others (even when he comes in alone) by name and gives high fives at the end of workouts – usually with a smile on his face.
He is very thoughtful and situationally aware in class to the space and people around him and in caring for the equipment and cleanup. He never fails to give genuine thanks to the coaches at the end of every class.
I’ve heard him humbly encouraging and connecting with others in their hospital care through his experience there as an anesthesiologist.
Besides his citizenship having served years in the Navy, he and his wife Ann (one of Sara’s clients) have a daughter currently serving (she comes in with him when she’s home). Mike also comes in to the Everproven work and cleanup days to give back.
He is one of the most positive members I know, never complaining. He just had shoulder surgery and immediately got back in with a smile on his face and is getting back to the movements that he is able to do.
I know he is proud to be a part of Everproven, and I’m really grateful that we have someone like him in our community and outside of it reflecting our values.
When did you join EverProven CrossFit and what brought you here?
In late 2023 I attended a class and loved the gym and the coaches.
What do you like best about being an EverProven athlete?
The community and the gym, and the coaches. I am far from being a great athlete as I scale most workouts and marvel at the strength and fitness of others. In addition, the best athletes at EverProven are so kind, and encouraging. The workouts can be brutal at times but your classmates will suffer with you. The coaching is great! In addition Coach Christy and the Legends group are awesome. I’ve also started some personal training with Coach Connor as I recover from my rotator cuff surgery and am optimistic for continued gains. I highly encourage folks to consider personal or small group training sessions.
Can you share a specific health improvement or positive change in your life that you attribute to EverProven?
As we age (I’m 65) we can lose muscle. Weight lifting is so important to decrease this trend, and despite not having the best flexibility, my deadlifts and squats have improved under the watchful eyes of coaches who correct bad technique. Also as a retired Navy Officer, I love honoring Michael Murphy and doing “ Murph“ (scaled) every year.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to become an EverProven athlete?
Many folks are intimidated by CrossFit despite knowing little about it. Come to a class…or three!! There are scaling options for every movement in the gym and for every fitness level. The coaches are so darn good at helping you get better.
When you aren’t at the gym what is your favorite thing to do?
Spending time with my wife and our dog Augie. I also love my job (most days) as an anesthesiologist.
What is one interesting fact many people don’t know about you?
8 years ago I was the commanding officer of a Navy Medical Facility in Northern Iraq.
